Pablo Cesar Amaringo (1938 - November 16 , 2009) was an acclaimed Peruvian artist & shaman - renowned for his intricate, colourful depictions of his visions from drinking the entheogenic plant brew ayahuasca . He is considered the most famous of all ayahuasca painters. He was first brought to the West's attention by Dennis McKenna and Luis Eduardo Luna, who met Pablo in Pucallpa while traveling during work on an ethnobotanical project. Pablo worked as a vegetalista , a shaman in the mestizo tradition of healing, for many years. Up to his death, he painted, helped run the Usko-Ayar school of painting, and supervised ayahuasca retreats. |

Comments by the owner:
I bought thisi painting at a time when I was actively participating in shamanic ceremonies and they served to create a huge spiritual awakening that changed my life forever.
The painting, at that time, was a daily joy and reminder of that magical world as I looked into the rich details of it every day on my wall.
Since then, my journey with ayahuasca has moved on and I no longer participate in such ceremonies.
The frame is a carved dark wood frame which beautifully mirrors the natural, organic nature of the painting. The frame is also in perfect condition.
I had the painting framed immediately after receiving it from Pablo and it has had pride of place in either my bedroom or sitting room ever since.
It is signed in the bottom right corner by him and dated 24.09.06 .
I bought the painting via an email exchange with him in 2008 and he sent it to me in London, where I was living then.
I discovered that the painting can also be seen on this website with an article on the artist's work.
http://www.thethird-eye.co.uk/a-shamans-visions-of-the-cosmos-by-pablo-amaringo/
I notice that the painting is at the top of that page. I guess the journalist thought this piece was the best of the 18 Pablo Amaringo paintings shown there.

Comments by the owner:
My brother started his Amaringo collection around 20 years ago. He studied as an anthropologist and was particularly fascinated in Amaringo's culture and loved his paintings. I know that he met with some of the artists from Amaringo's school of art some years ago. Unfortunately my brother died suddenly in September 2021, and so these paintings have been passed on to me and my brother collectively.
One of the admirers of Pablo Amaringo's paintings, turned Pablo on to some especially bright paints that even glow under black light. Since then, Pablo was using these unusually-bright paints in his paintings, including this one. Just for fun, the owner of this painting decided to photograph this paintinng under a black light (UV light). Here's what this painting looks like under a black light:

The black frame uses museum glass and uses a "floating" technique: "Floating" is the framing technique whereby it looks like the painting is floating inside the frame, but it is actually glued (with special non-damaging glue) on to a U-shape behind the painting. It looks really nice.

I found this artist at a Maps convention in San Jose , California , and I purchased it from the "mermaids" (the staff) at the 99 High Art Gallery in Santa Monica. Three days after I purchased this painting, Pablo passed away. Thankfully, we had him write in his own hand a description of the story behind his painting: The pink dolphins taking the men up river to visit the mermaids. Amazing Amazon folk lore.
This painting is a true gem - a rare find - and should be treasured .
Also aspects of this painting glow in the dark, and the painting is three dimensional with 3D glasses on - truly mind blowing.
The letter that Pablo Amaringo wrote - about this painting - just days before he passed away:

Commentary by the Seller:
Purchased during ceremony retreat in Brazil from Anthropologist Luis Eduardo Luna, author of Ayahuasca Visions .
This one literally glows with spiritual light.
Pablo described elements in this work depicting the world of a clairvoyant shaman as "Seraph's are lifting Eloim's excel throne" and inter-dimensional beings who serve to feed the shaman's powers as "virtual, phantasmagoric and vampiric neutrinos." The Quechua language Pablo expressed these thoughts in does not translate many of his shamanic understandings directly further enshrouding them in mystery and leaving the viewer to create meaning from the images.
Angelic overtones pervade this work, a higher nucleus is infused with spiritual dimensions while electric vines connect to the earthly realm of the Shaman in ceremony, his animal allies serving him in the vines. The Seer has the gift to access inter-dimensional realms and bring back knowing to earthly existence. The piece is both calming and uplifting, drawing one in like a mirror that reflects the interconnected oneness of all things.

Commentary by the Seller:
Seller purchased piece directly from Pablo Amaringo.
A larger landscape orientation piece compared with many Amaringos which are Portrait orientation and smaller. A mind expanding work that includes angels, UFOs, and visionary globes.
Pablo entitled this painting "the good spiritual teacher" - referring to Mother Ayahuasca.
Pablo features many icons in this painting that are associated with the highest path of a sacred Ayahuasca journey. When engaging in a communication with Mother Ayahuasca, Pablo has mentioned her revealing to him nourishing, comforting messages through loving messengers like the pink river dolphins, beautiful Amazonian birds and angels.
In the center of it all is the Shaman, who holds his third eye as the doorway to this journey that seems to evolve in a circular pattern. Pablo not only has an exceptionally clear and unique manner of portraying the heavenly palace he arrived at after many years of shamanic practice, but also paints the intricate path of his journey as traveling through the veins of a vegetation. He further emphasizes the feeling of connectivity to the earth by featuring a half man, half tree being whose circulatory system flows through the journey's path.
The delicate symmetrical balance subtly altered by cycles of time is captured by two globes overlapping in the center showing Pablo's understanding of the slow progression of nature and maintaining its sacred pace. This piece is larger than most and filled with thought provoking imagery that speaks to each viewer in a language beyond words.

Purchased during ceremony retreat in Brazil from Anthropologist Luis Eduardo Luna, author of Ayahuasca Visions.
Artist honors indigenous women shamans and their powerful healing skills. This piece has a soft, calming feel with pastel colors and blended healing imagery.
Female Shamans are the subject of this extraordinary piece showing the women healing a man made ill by an attack with psychic darts perhaps inspired by Pablo's own warfare with a sorcerer during his journey through shamanism before changing paths and focusing on his artistic gifts.
The feminine energy given off by the power of Mother Ayahuasca allows these practitioners to escape pursuit by transforming themselves into caterpillars. It shows other powers being passed through the indigenous women of the Amazon and granting them dominion over levitation, love, and protection.
The ceremonial use of breath to represent the presence of the Spirit is featured here blowing the life of the Spirit into us, the viewers. The love and sacredness of this ceremony is given to us through these figures of protective, motherly energy and power.

Commentary by the Seller:
Seller purchased piece directly from Pablo Amaringo.
Very dreamy. The eyes at the top pull you in, the senses are represented in diamonds near the bottom, the staircase connects them and the boa transforms one during the journey. I can stare at this one for hours!
This work features the different faces of the Shaman, including his most famous Mother Ayahuasca, a face commonly seen when having ingested the sacred Amazonian vine. The detailed psychedelic patterns buried deep inside the skin of the faces and the leopard's head very carefully imitate the deepening, evolving, breathing visualizations of any psychedelic experience.
The visualizations in Amaringo's paintings also commonly represent the hypnotic powers of the snake, who legends tell would hypnotize its prey before they devour it. Amaringo often seeks to uncover the meaning behind being eaten by the snake in his visions. He connects the snake imagery with that of a "ladder of knowledge". To be eaten by the snake is to be stripped of ego and reborn into shamanic power.
The different portals in the painting represent the multitude of directions Amaringo felt he could choose to go in throughout his long, spiritual journey. In this painting Amaringo has liberated the realm of possibilities that exists within an Ayahuasca vision and appropriately named this display of different realms "Ladders of Knowledge". Amaringo described the visions of patterns that he would see in this vision as having a geometry so unique and intricate, it is beyond any math or science yet to be understood by humankind.

An unusual departure from visionary to realistic and a great value for this artist. Besides painting his ayahuasca visions", for which he was famous, Pablo Amaringo also created some "naturalistic" paintings. This painting is a beautiful example of that.

Pablo and I had a nice connection (given my small bit of Spanish and his small bit of English.) He was very gracious, aware that I didn't come to buy anything, since I had little money to spare. But our connection was on a level that didn't require much spoken language. I stayed in Julio's house for a week and visited Pablo every day. He was weak and ill, but still showing his paintings to people who came by. When I visited on the last day of my trip, he had me wait in the studio for a few minutes and returned bearing an armful of necklaces which he placed one at a time around my neck. And then gave me a long hug.
I traveled to many places in Peru that year and returned 5 times before Pablo died. During those visits, I purchased a small painting and then a much larger painting which Pablo chose for me - explaining that the woman in the painting going toward the sun was me. That was how he saw me.
In my cottage in Califonia that painting has hung on my wall where I see it and feel it every day. I had it framed by a professional framer and it has never moved from it's spot for 10 years.
Having worked for many years with the ayuhuasca medicine, the painting continues to speak to me, revealing it's hidden treasures - as Pablo intended.
Now, at 77, I am trying to get my affairs in order before I get too old. Since none of my children feel attached to the painting, and I could really use the money for my old age, I am wanting to sell it to someone who could appreciate it and afford it.

I bought these from Pablo when I visited him in his hut with no electricity, I had just done medicine dieta, so I was very open. the paintings blew my mind, so magical and so much detail, and they even glow in the dark. Pablo himself was such a humble, peaceful guy living in such simple conditions, dirt floor, that I wanted to support him and so I bought a few paintings. He told me that he has a photographic memory , and when he would journey with the medicine, he would see the image of a painting and it would get stuck in his mind, and drive him crazy until he would paint it, which took 3 months of constant work to paint, until finally the image would disappear from his mind.

Comments by the current owner:
In 2004 I traveled to a small Peruvian city nestled in the Amazon Rainforest to explore the spiritual and healing traditions of the indigenous cultures of the area. During my journey I learned of a retreat center that was owned and operated by an artist named Pablo Amaringo. A friend of mine arranged for me to meet Pablo and to find out more about his retreat.
It was early afternoon when I arrived, and a typical hot and muggy Amazonian day. My friend and I were welcomed by a couple of younger kids who I later learned were painting students of Pablo. As we waited in the living area of a small and humble wooden house, I noticed on the walls surrounding me some of the most unique and extraordinary artwork. They were a serious of paintings exploding with bright colors and depicting Amazon landscapes. Within the natural scenery were images of nature spirits, fantastical animals, and indigenous shamans using visionary plants. I knew a little bit about the mystical reality reflected in the paintings, and it was the visionary plants of the Amazon that had inspired and motivated my journey to Peru. A few minutes later Pablo appeared, a small and humble little man, and once we were introduced, he began to tell me stories of his time as a vegetalista (shaman), and his travels deep into the jungles of the Amazon. For many years he had worked as a healer, specifically with a plant medicine called Ayahuasca.
He told me of his travels, and how he eventually had to leave the healing path because he was severely attacked by shamans who walk the dark path and who use the knowledge of the plants to accumulate power to cause illness, rather than healing. They use powers for revenge, control over others, and for many other self serving purposes. Pablo expressed that his life felt in danger and thus he decided to find another occupation. Being an artist, he decided to start painting his many years of visions that had been given to him during Ayahuasca sessions. Eventually he was discovered by an anthropologist who helped him create a book of his artwork which resulted in his emergence as the first folk artist depicting the mythical reality and cosmology of the Amazon. As we sat in his living room, I began to realize that this was a very special and unique man. I asked him about the dieta that I was going to do at his retreat center with a Campa shaman who was an old friend of his. He explained that doing a traditional plant diet was the only true way to gain access to the knowledge and healing powers of the plants.
He described a time in his early days as a healer when he had problems with his heart, and completely healed it with a two week diet in the jungle. I was excited and inspired by his tales to do my first dieta, and we wrapped up the conversation and made the drive out into the rainforest to his retreat center. To make a long story short, my two weeks there was one of the most powerful and transformative events of my life. In my fist session with the Campa man Don Fidel, I remember the jungle coming alive with electrical energy as the plant medicine began to take affect and he started singing sacred Icarros. The trees in particular were radiating light and seemed to have an intelligence and consciousness beyond my comprehension. I felt so lucky that I had the good fortune to be the only person there, and have private ceremonies. When my dieta was complete, I returned to Pablo's house and needless to say, his paintings had taken on a completely new meaning for me. We did a painting lesson and his eyes gleamed as we painted our own individual and collective visions. Before I left I decided to buy two of his larger paintings, both of which you see for sale here. One painting features the mythical electric eel called Yakumama who is being tamed by the songs of two powerful Inca shamans. The other features two celestial healers from other galaxies along with a plethora of nature spirits. These works are quite special and valuable now that Pablo has left the body, and because of his legacy as the first folk painter of Ayahuasca visions.

Comments by the current owner:
I came across the work of Pablo Amaringo in the early 90s when I met Luis Eduardo Luna, who was trying to raise money for the Usko Ayar School (Pablo's art school) and to get Pablo and Usko Ayar "on the map" in the art world. I am not (nor was I then) in the art world, but Luis Eduardo liked some ideas I had and asked if I could be of assistance. At the time, my ex-fiance and I printed up notecards of several of the student's paintings, and we sold them and both the student's and Pablos's paintings at conferences and to bookstores to raise money for the school. After that we were able to secure a calendar deal on Pomegranate Publishing for Usko Ayar, and eventually found someone far more experienced and knowledgable about the art world to help them bring their work forward. I met Pablo only once, but found him to be a very kind and beautiful person who carried a great deal of light. I felt and still feel a very sweet connection to him.

I obtained this painting in 2008 from Bruce Pavitt, founder of Sub Pop records, who originally bought it directly from Louis Edwardo Luna, author of the original Ayahuasca Visions book.
